Why men's shirts have the buttons on the right, but women's shirts have the buttons on the left?

That's because in 17th century when buttons were discovered most of the royal women were dressed by servants. If the buttons are on the left it's easier for a right handed person to put it.
Since most people are right-handed it was easier for the servants to put on buttons on women shirts.

Men used to dress themselves, so it was easier for them to put on buttons if they are on the right.

Now it has become a norm and so no one wants to change it.

Interesting - I was thinking so that they know at the dry cleaners which were men's and which were women's shirts.

Women are typically charged more for dry cleaning of shirts.

Glad I'm probably wrong...
