(63) The Center of the Milky Way Galaxy is...

Astronomers have discovered that there is a black hole in the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. If you went out at night to look for the 'center' of our galaxy, from the Northern Hemisphere, what time of the year would it be and in which direction would you be looking? What are the Constellations you would see there?

You would look towards Sagittarius to see galactic center. Today, October 12th, 2007, in Philadelphia, I would look south, and then up a bit from the horizon now at 7:45pm. Up and to the left would be Capicorn, but by looking a bit to the east I could also see Pisces and then Aquarius in the South East sky.

Your right about looking towards Sagittarius (in fact, the black hole is NAMED Sagittarius A). I'm just not sure what time of year that is in the northern sky.

I'd say techfun's right. What do you say Pam ?

Yeah, techfun got it - I was thinking 'Summer' for when to look for that area. It's the best time of the year to catch it in the evening after the sun goes down.

WTG techfun!
